The upcoming movie “Oppenheimer” will explore the life and legacy of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the man behind the development of the atomic bomb. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Michael Nolan, the movie will tell the story of Oppenheimer’s rise to power, his struggles with fame and his ultimate fall from grace.
Who’s Involved?
The movie is based on the award-winning biography American Prometheus, written by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. It will star John Slattery as J. Robert Oppenheimer, alongside an impressive cast of actors including Sam Waterston, Michael Stuhlbarg, Paul Giamatti, Amy Madigan, and Malcolm McDowell.
The Plot
Oppenheimer was the son of a German immigrant who had made his fortune by importing textiles in New York City. During his undergraduate studies, he conducted experiments with Ernest Rutherford and Niels Bohr, and eventually earned his doctorate in theoretical physics from the University of Göttingen.
In November 1940, Oppenheimer married Katherine Peuning Harrison, a radical Berkeley student. When World War II began, Oppenheimer eagerly became involved in the efforts to develop an atomic bomb, which were already taking up much of the time and facilities of Lawrence’s Radiation Laboratory at Berkeley. He was invited to take over work on neutron calculations, and in June 1942 General Leslie Groves appointed Oppenheimer as the scientific director of the Manhattan Project. He oversaw the construction of the Los Alamos laboratory, where he gathered the best minds in physics to work on the problem of creating an atomic bomb.
The movie will tell the story of the events leading up to the development of the atomic bomb, including Oppenheimer’s famous quote “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds”. It will also explore his struggles with fame and the ultimate fall from grace he experienced in 1953, when his security clearance was taken away due to accusations of communist sympathies.
