The episode starts with a flashback to 2023 and the early days of the outbreak. We follow Sarah, Joel’s daughter, as she experiences the outbreak first-hand and the terror of the unknown. Sarah’s death is a heartbreaking moment that sets the tone for the series. It’s a harsh reminder of the reality of the world, and how quickly things can change.

The episode also effectively sets up the conflict between the Fireflies and the oppressive government.
